Most of the boundaries between cloud layers are smooth. This area is not. What's going on there?

I think closer images of this area could really turn out to be quite unique. I am also interested in why this cloud formation appears here.

I'm also curious to know why the pattern in the clouds here appears to be different than elsewhere. Is there some soft of temperature difference or is something else going on below the surface to cause the "fracture"?

The fact that this area isn't smooth is very strange. The images already gathered also make me more curious about the why in this situation.
